Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine

Established in 1954, Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine (NJUCM) has experienced her historical periods as Jiangsu Provincial Continuation School of Chinese Medicine, Jiangsu Provincial School of Chinese Medicine, Nanjing College of Chinese Medicine, Jiangsu New Medical College and Nanjing College of Chinese Medicine. As one of the earliest established universities of Traditional Chinese Medicine in China, it is a university involved in key construction projects and co-developed by the People’s Government of Jiangsu Province and State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine of the People’s Republic of China. Over the last 62 years, NJUCM has trained the first wave of teachers, created the first edition of textbooks and teaching syllabus, produced the earliest academicians in TCM field, made fundamental contribution the establishment and promotion of higher education mode for P. R. China, therefore has been renowned as “the cradle of China’s higher education in Chinese Medicine”.

Located in Nanjing, NJUCM has Xianlin and Hanzhongmen campuses. Currently, it has nearly 20,000 enrolled students of various kinds and sets schools including School of Basic Medicine, School of the First Clinical Medicine, School of the Second Clinical Medicine, School of Medicine and Life Sciences, School of Pharmacy, School of Health Economics and Management, School of Nursing, School of Foreign Languages, School of International Education, School of Information Technology, School of Psychology, International Institute of Chinese Medicine Jinfang, School of Integrative Medicine, Graduate School, School of Continued Education, School of Humanities and Political Education and etc., offering 28 undergraduate programs and involving 6 branches of academic disciplines including medicine, management, science, engineering, economics and humanities, initially forming the educational pattern that centers on Chinese medicine while combining Chinese and Western medicines and developing multiple disciplines as its support.

NJUCM now has 1 national key disciplines (first rank), 2 national key disciplines (second rank), 2 national key (cultivation) disciplines, 2 construction projects of preponderant disciplines of colleges and universities in Jiangsu Province, 33 key disciplines of State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine of the P.R.C. NJUCM has two disciplines, Clinical Medicine, Pharmacology and Toxicology has been included in the top 1% of Global ESI ranking. NJUCM is among the first batch of universities eligible of awarding master and doctoral degrees in China. Now it boasts 3 doctoral programs (first rank) in Chinese Medicine, Chinese Medicine Pharmacology, and Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine. Its degree programs cover all the disciplines (second rank) in Chinese Medicine, Chinese Medicine Pharmacology, and Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine. It is authorized to decide on doctoral student’s supervisors and professorship in main academic disciplines.

NJUCM insists on the students as the center of education, striving to push forward the training mode reform for elite students in Chinese Medicine programs such as the nine-year bachelor to doctor degree program, the 5+3 overall training program for clinical physician. NJUCM has been elected among the pilot universities to conduct the national reform project of Physician Education and Training Program of Excellence and currently it has 3 pilot projects. It has 5 national level characteristic programs, 2 national level pilot projects for overall major reform, 6 national level courses for excellent resources sharing, 2 national level teaching groups, 1 national level talents cultivation mode innovation experimental zone, 3 national level experimental teaching demonstration centers, 1 national level university students off-campus practical education base, 33 national level planning textbooks (as editor-in-chief), 4 national level teaching achievement. It has 3 directly affiliated hospitals, the Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine (Jiangsu Provincial Hospital of Chinese Medicine), The Second Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine (The Second Jiangsu Provincial Hospital of Chinese Medicine), Bayi Hospital Affiliated to Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine (The PLA Bayi Hospital), and 25 non-directly affiliated hospitals, 4 Clinical Medicine Schools of Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine, 1 affiliated pharmaceutical company, and over 100 teaching and internship bases of various kinds.
